"India's next fashion consumer is not in a metro, she is in Indore, Jaipur, Surat, Coimbatore. She is aspirational, culturally rooted, and rapidly redefining what style means in this country."
This trend book was developed as part of the Fashion Forecasting for Indian Retail elective at NIFT, with a focused brief: to forecast accessory trends for the Spring/Summer 2020 season for a consumer segment that is rapidly gaining purchasing power but remains largely unaddressed by mainstream fashion forecasting — young women from India's Tier-2 cities.
Through macro and micro trend analysis, consumer lifestyle mapping, cultural scanning, and retail research, we identified three distinct directional stories, each reflecting a different facet of this consumer's evolving identity, aspirations, and relationship with fashion.
The three trend directions
Direction 01
Time Compression
For the young woman navigating the accelerating pace of modern life - career, social media, ambition, relationships, all in parallel. This direction forecasts accessories that are bold, efficient, and expressive: pieces that do more, say more, and demand less time to choose. Think maximalist stacking, statement ear cuffs, and convertible jewellery that transitions seamlessly from day to night. The trend speaks to a consumer whose identity is in motion and whose accessories must keep up.
Direction 02
Self Love
A counter-cultural response to the pressures of performance, this direction is personal, soft, and intentional. Accessories here are chosen as acts of self-expression and self-care rather than conformity. Organic forms, pastel tones, personalisable charms, and pieces with emotional or symbolic meaning dominate this story. It reflects a growing consumer consciousness around individuality and mental wellbeing, a shift that is as cultural as it is commercial.
Direction 03
Conservative Affluence
The third direction addresses the Tier-2 consumer who is newly affluent but culturally anchored who desires premium quality and status signalling without departing from her traditional value system. This story forecasts elevated classics: refined gold-toned pieces, heritage craft techniques reimagined in contemporary silhouettes, and accessories that communicate taste and prosperity in a register that resonates with her community and context.
